The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty: A Novel, by Amanda Filipacchi

"A sure comic touch . . . smart and sweet . . . a tribute to the pleasures of friendship." ―The New Yorker

In the heart of New York City, a group of artistic friends struggles with society's standards of beauty. At the center are Barb and Lily, two women at opposite ends of the beauty spectrum, but with the same problem: each fears she will never find a love that can overcome her looks. Barb, a stunningly beautiful costume designer, makes herself ugly in hopes of finding true love. Meanwhile, her friend Lily, a brilliantly talented but plain-looking musician, goes to fantastic lengths to attract the man who has rejected her―with results that are as touching as they are transformative.

To complicate matters, Barb and Lily discover that they may have a murderer in their midst, that Barb’s calm disposition is more dangerously provocative than her beauty ever was, and that Lily's musical talents are more powerful than anyone could have imagined. Part literary whodunit, part surrealist farce, The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty is a smart, modern-day fairy tale. With biting wit and offbeat charm, Amanda Filipacchi illuminates the labyrinthine relationship between beauty, desire, and identity, asking at every turn: what does it truly mean to allow oneself to be seen?

“[A] farcical novel . . . riveting to read.” (Nathan Reese - New York Times T Magazine)

Review

“Filipacchi’s book [has] a philosophical heft and prods us to examine our own prejudices…. Funny, surreal, absurd, and charmingly preposterous…. Filipacchi’s characters never question the weirdness around them but meet it with a delightful, practical ingenuity.” —Sarah Lyall, The New York Times Book Review

“[A] farcical novel…riveting to read.” —Nathan Reese, The New York Times T Magazine

“[A] zanily satirical, spot-on novel.” —Leigh Haber, O, The Oprah Magazine

“Filipacchi’s novel—which is brilliant and original—mixes all the elements of an amazing story, with the perfect language to tell it. You want to read this book.” —Bustle

“Filipacchi’s fourth [novel], is a critique of how society’s visual valuations override the importance of character: a ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ manifesto.” —The Daily Beast

“[A] darkly humorous modern fairy tale.” —Huffington Post

“Part murder mystery, part satire, part meditation, Ms. Filipacchi’s book has also been called a modern fairy tale.” —Laren Stover, New York Observer

“Filipacchi's fourth novel blithely upends the social constructs of beauty, desire, and art in her signature brisk, darkly comic style… with sharp surreal turns and layers of subversive meaning… While looks can kill, they're no match for Filipacchi's rapier wit.” —Publishers Weekly

“An ingeniously crafted fictional meditation on power and freedom, essence and appearance that takes the form of a philosophical farce. A delight for the mind that penetrates the heart.” —Walter Kirn

“Amanda Filipacchi writes with a deceptive ease, creating magic out of thin air. She makes the ordinary come alive with possibility and stuffs her pages full of laughter, sadness and characters that are unforgettable…Filipacchi is one of our best satirists.” —Neil LaBute

Timely Examination of the Beauty Myth
By S. Coleman
In an age where perfectly beautiful women are Photoshopped and plastic surgery is de rigueur for women in Hollywood, Amanda Filipacchi's novel is timely. As in her previous novels, Filipacchi brings a light comic touch to her examination of serious matters. Friends Barb and Lily are at opposite ends of the beauty spectrum, but true love is elusive for both of them. Barb's attempts to disguise her beauty by wearing a fat suit, contacts and a frizzy wig are hilarious, whereas Lily's transformation by way of her extraordinary talent poses the question of how much we value talent relative to physical attributes. As a woman whose weight has fluctuated quite a lot over the years, and who has been treated dramatically differently according to body size/shape, I found this book very on point and enjoyed all the imaginative twists Filipacchi brought to the story.

Different than Anticipated
By TikiTulip
I bought this book after reading an essay by Ms. Filipacchi. The essay was well-written and thoughtful. I bought the book on the premise the writing would be similar, but in novel form. The book is not what I expected. The premise of this book could have been very thought provoking. Instead I found it light-hearted and at time a bit unbelievable. As a another reviewer said, "It reads like a fairy tale." I think that is exactly the author's intent. I didn't dislike the book, but found that it was very different from what I anticipated. I thought there would be much more angst and soul-searching.

the unfortunate importance of character development and sensable plot lines
By Samantha Bean
I usually don't review books. Rarely do I walk away from a book wishing I hadn't spent the time reading it. Unfortunately this was one of those times. I was hoping for a funny, insightful read. What I got was a book with shallow characters, a confusing and unbelievable plot line, and very little actual meaning in the end. The characters were banal and boring for the most part, with Barb's whining being almost unbearable at times. The story barely graces the topic of how beauty is perceived as a whole, rather, just how two extremely psychologically scarred character's deal with their beauty or lack-there-of. Then, the element of supernatural occurrences/ magic is introduced along with a shoddy murder plot line and another weird hostage situation. Honestly, this book was one of the strangest books I've ever read, and not in a good way. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
