Millie Marotta is a freelance illustrator working in her studio by the sea in a little corner of West Wales. She has developed a mild obsession with all things flora and fauna, which along with intricate pattern and detail remains an ongoing theme in her work, whether it be for a commission or simply to indulge her own flight of fancy. She works in both traditional and digital media and enjoys working on a diverse range of projects which include editorial, advertising, merchandising, design for web, textiles and bespoke original works. 74 Beautiful Birds, Animals and Plants of the World's Grasslands – printed on both sides of the page

[[VIDEOID:1c97bee2515983157c53bbb1d9c4a9de]]I have enjoyed all of Millie Marotta's previous coloring books (“Animal Kingdom” and Tropical World”). Her coloring books are of the natural world around us. In “Wild Savannah”, Ms. Marotta circles the globe with animals from various grassland areas. This includes the traditional African wildlife but also animals of Northern Australian, South America, and even Asia. By taking this point of view, the coloring book is filled with diverse and interesting animals and, for me at least, it makes me stop and think about the areas that the animals inhabit.
There are so many animals in the coloring book, including zebras, elephants, rhinoceros, lions, flamingos, various insects, hippopotamus, and much, much more. There are many designs which either focus on or include birds. Of the 74 designs in the book, five of them are semi-duplicates of the opposite page. As with her other coloring books, Ms. Marotta has included a few of these “duplicates” which do not contain the high level of detail of their “twin”. This allows the doodle artist or the blending artist a canvas to make those designs their own.
This particular book is the UK version. The US version will be released in a few months. I will do a comparison of the two coloring books at that point and will include my comments about any differences that I find in the comments section below. I would edit the text of this review but currently there seems to be an issue with editing reviews with photos.
The book is in the larger square format that is typical for many British coloring books. The book cover is very pretty. It has touches of color and gold foil on the front of the cover. You could certainly color the remainder of the design if you so choose. The inside of both the front and back of the cover have a fold out flap and artwork similar to that of the front of the cover is printed for coloring fun.
The designs are printed on both sides of white heavyweight, non-perforated pages. There are also 14 designs which spread across two pages. The pages in my book were well aligned. There are 60 single page designs. Some of the single page designs and all of the two page designs merge into the binding of the book. As the binding is sewn rather than glued, you can easily remove several pages at a time by snipping a few threads. I was able to break the spine and get the book to lay flat for ease of coloring.
I generally test many types of coloring medium (a list is included below) and this is what I discovered in testing this book:
All alcohol-based markers bleed through the paper easily. All water-based markers either bled through (especially Stabilo) or leave distinct shadows of color on the backside of the page. India ink artist pens also leave a color shadow. My various gel pens left a slight darkening on the backside of the page – noticeable but I could not tell the color of each – just that they were there. My coloring pencils did the best of the various medium. They went on well and blended well; however the soft lead pencils were not quite as good a coverage as I have had with other books. My hard lead pencils went on true to type and did not leave an indent at the back of the page.
These are the coloring medium that I use for testing. If there is something else you feel I should be testing, please let me know and I will see if I can add it to my growing pile:
Markers: 1) alcohol-based – Copic Sketch, Prismacolor double ended markers (brush and fine point), Sharpies (fine and ultra-fine) Bic Mark-its (fine and ultra-fine) and 2) water-based – Tombows dual end markers (brush and fine point), Stabilo 88, and Staedler triplus fineliners
India Ink: Faber-Castell PITT artist pens (brush tip)
Gel Pens: Sakura, Fiskars, Uni-ball Signo in the following sizes - 0.28/0.38/0.5/1.0 and Tekwriter
Coloring Pencils: Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, Derwent Colorsoft, Prismacolor Verithins, and Faber-Castell Polychromos

A must have!

I have become a big fan of Millie Marotta's coloring books. She and Johanna Basford are my favorites. I haven't had this book long, but I have completed one page, which I'll post below. The designs in this book are complex without being overly complicated or extremely detailed. I don't find books with extreme detailing to be relaxing - they give me a headache! These are lovely wildlife drawings that lend themselves to lifelike or fantasy color treatments. The paper is nice and thick, whitish in color. The book is put together very well, and can be pushed flat very easily for coloring near the seam. I highly recommend this as a must have for you coloring book library.

For Marottas' third colouring book, she has wisely stuck to the structure that has proven popular with her previous books, Animal Kingdom and Tropical Wonderland.
The book is a square 25cm x 25cm, with a lovely white, black and metallic cover. The spine is a green, which looks great next to the blue and red spines of the previous two on my bookshelf!
The spine is glue and string bound, preventing any loosening of the pages! This does mean that it is a bit difficult to get to the centre of the images, although the spine does become quite pliable after a little use.
The paper quality is the same as Marottas' previous books, bright white and slightly textured. Pencil does lay on the paper very nicely, and I was able to achieve quite a good amount of layers. I had no bleeding with fineliners or waterbased markers, although there was some shadowing. This is a shame as the images are double sided.
Images
Those familiar with Marottas' style will love this book - the images are the same style and design as her previous work. Within her style, there is quite a range of images however, so it's unlikely you'll get bored of this book!
Looking through this book feels like going on a walk through a zoo - in the best way possible! Each page turn reveals a new beast, or scene - an armadillo, a flock of birds, a pair of giraffes having a drink, a regal lion and so much more.
There are a variety of styles throughout this book - some pages are simply an animal made up of leaves/flowers, others are a more complex scene, others still are a repeating pattern.
Images are a mix of double and single page spreads, with most being single page spreads - the double page spreads are more frequent than her previous books however!
Like other books, there are a handful of pages that give you the opportunity to add embellishments to the image. I know many people don't like this feature, and it seems Marotta was listening - these images no longer have any writing or instructions on them. There is merely a less intricate copy of an image on the facing page of the original. I've included an example below!
Line thickness remains moderately thin throughout, with little variance within images. Intricacy is moderate - some images have quite a lot of smaller spaces, with others having larger spaces allowing you room to blend and shade.
Health
I always love nature/animal themed books for mental health issues - the subject and the colours that are used tend to be very calming and give you something cheerful to focus on. This book is no exception, colouring the images and focussing on the scenes certainly helped me get through a bad day or an anxious night.
The intricacy level makes it a great book to help distract from pain or other health issues, as it's not so intricate as to put you off, but just intricate enough to me you focussing on the image in front of you. It's great for varying concentration levels as well, as the range of scenes and patterns makes it easy to choose an image to suit your mood and concentration at the time.
I think those with fine motor or vision impairments may find the images a little tricky, but please do check the images before you decide!
