About the Author
Ruth Pointer began her formal vocal training as director of the junior choir in her father's church, then pursued a singing career with her sisters, Bonnie, June, and Anita. She occasionally stepped out as a solo artist, contributing to movie soundtracks and lending background vocals. She lives in Boston, Massachusetts. Marshall Terrill is a veteran music, film, and sports writer and the author of 20 books, including bestselling biographies of Elvis Presley and Steve McQueen. Three of his books are in development to be made into movies. He lives in Tempe, Arizona.

A must-have for Pointer Sisters fans

Anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s knows the Pointer Sisters. Their hits are uncommonly well-remembered to this day and remain unaltered by the passing decades since they were recorded, in part because their unique vocal sound made them an instantly recognizable act in a paint-by-numbers industry. Although the Pointer Sisters are one of the best-selling all-female singing groups of all time, very little has actually been written about them; thanks to Ruth Pointer (expertly assisted by Marshall Terrill), this has finally been corrected. "Still So Excited - My Life as a Pointer Sister" is the book that fans have been hoping to read, and then some. It's all in there - her life, her relationship with her parents and siblings, her struggles with addiction, and her healing as well. Best of all, the music recorded by this band is in there as well - she has something to say about every album they ever recorded in their productive career, even the lesser-known ones, and it's really fascinating to share her insights on the music business. The tragic path chosen by her sister June Pointer is addressed in painfully clear details, as well as her passing, demonstrating what could have been Ruth's fate as well. This book is extremely well-written, and one of the things I loved the most about it is that Ruth doesn't try to portrait herself in a more flattering way than she deserves; she doesn't try to hide behind her childhood to justify her bad choices and bad decisions, and her often humorous and funny writing style cleverly avoids the self-pity that plagues too many rock star autobiographies. She tells it like it is, although some egos will probably get scratched by the stories she tells (beginning with her sister Bonnie, who left the group in 1977 and apparently proceeded to alienate her entire family throughout the following decades). It's definitely a must-have for every Pointer Sisters, and a blueprint for other artists interested in writing their memoirs.

Inspiring story of an amazing woman overcoming personal demons and success in the music business

First of all, I am a die-hard and long-time Pointer Sisters fan. That said, Ruth Pointer's auto-biography is completely different than most celebrity biographies. If you are looking for a book that is full of name-dropping, bad-mouthing celebrity gossip, this is NOT it. Ruth bares all in this painfully honest story of her life from childhood to present day. She writes in detail about her hard-charging life of drugs and alcohol and, happily, how she tackled those demons with decades of sobriety. Ruth is open about struggles with parenting and love while living the life of a music star. Readers will find interesting how Ruth and her sisters managed their relationships during their 40 years in the music business. Ruth has led a very complex and amazing life and her struggles and triumphs are well worth the read. Just look at that smile of hers on the cover and tell me how you don't want to know what it behind it.

What a story! I never would have imagined what Ruth wrote. Of course as a fan since their first release in 1973 and a steady student of their vocals (I learned so much from them) I knew there was more to their tight knit sisterhood than was visible. But the strength, struggles, triumphs and continued legacy are even more profound to me. Indeed "Still So Excited" (as "Only Sisters Can Do That honey") is a glorious testament to sisterly love with no boundaries and relentless dedication to each other. The unified vocals and distinct personalities bonded like a slice of heaven for the world to enjoy. It makes me sad to know some of the backstory and the lack of promotion they received from inept recording companies in their latter years. There were so many missed opportunities for major hits. Still, the group made history unmatched because there is nor was there a group like The Pointer Sisters that dared to record and sing in SO many different musical styles. Just try and name another female vocal trio or quartet that accomplished that. No ya cant but YES they can and DID!
