From Online Book ClubIn many ways, Religion Leaks is a study in absurdity. The "news" stories are imaginative to the point of weirdness. Each story is both incredibly creative in and of itself as well as totally unique from each of the others. Similarly to good science fiction, the situations and events described in this book skate the fine line between feasible and improbable. [...] The humor is in the reconciliation of the absurd to the realistic. This is an area where true creativity shines, since anyone with a Mad Lib can form an absurd idea. Mr. Ramalho demonstrates how something that sounds totally, out-of-this-world crazy might actually come about or be explained in a futuristic society.

Quality absurdist satire; NOT for politically correct, religiously sensitive, or easily offended readers.

As promised in the description of the book given at the top of this page, _Religion Leaks_ is a “thought-provoking, funny, ironical . . . take on atheistic satire”, and I’m not going to include a synopsis or summary with this review because the full version of the aforementioned description serves that purpose. If you read that, you’ll know exactly what you’re in for. A few words of warning: If your religious sensibilities are easily offended, if you consider yourself politically correct, or if you’re a religious conservative or fundamentalist of any creed or denomination, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!
Briefly, the basic premise of the book is that a modern person gains access to a series of news reports from the 22nd century and leaks them to those of us living today. No conventional narrative follows; after giving the setup, the leaker disappears, and the leaks appear as standalone stories, one to a chapter.
I enjoyed _Religion Leaks_ and found it to be hilarious in places. I have some criticism, however, and as is my habit, I’ll offer it before moving on to the praise. The book, at least this 1st Kindle edition, is riddled with errors. Almost every page, if not every page, contains at least one, and in many cases several, errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, or syntax. It appears that author Daniel Ramalho cut corners with the editing process before publishing the book, which would explain most of the errors. I also suspect that English isn’t Ramalho’s first language. If so, that would both explain some of the awkward sentences and show off Ramalho’s self-deprecating humor since the subject of chapter 5 wins every Nobel prize in a single year after writing his theory of consciousness in English, which is not his native language. Despite the numerous errors, however, they are not so egregious as to be anything more than from mildly distracting to somewhat annoying, and they never render the text unintelligible. _Religion Leaks_ is replete with absurdist satire, and Ramalho spares no ideological group, individual, or major monotheistic religion. He is an equal opportunity skewerer of believers, nonbelievers, and not-quite-sure-what-they-believers and the ideas, philosophies, theologies, spiritualities, and behaviors they embrace or exhibit. A reviewer on another site wrote that there was no laugh-out-loud humor in the book, but I disagree. The book abounds with scatological humor, which can become tiresome in heavy doses, and the first four chapters, or “Leaks” especially (a complete chapter listing follows this review below) are full of very juvenile potty humor and ‘dick jokes’. But there is an abundance of sophisticated humor too, and Ramalho has a flair for subtly and cleverly teasing out the hilarity or absurdity of many different ideas and the actions they inspire. There were several occasions on which I did laugh out loud, particularly in the last two or three chapters/“Leaks”.
I mentioned above the more juvenile humor deployed in the earlier chapters. The quality of the philosophical/theological ideas discussed in the early chapters is, like the humor, more simplistic or less well developed. I think that’s intentional, though, as the quality of the humor as well as of the maturity of thought exhibited steadily improves as the book progresses, and by the last several chapters, Ramalho shows off some very high quality philosophical and satirical thinking.
I ended up enjoying _Religion Leaks_ a great deal and I highly recommend it for readers who are open-minded, appreciate good satire, and don’t mind having their religious beliefs skewered, roasted, and ridiculed. Like I wrote above, though; if your religious sensibilities are easily offended, you may want to take care to avoid this book as diligently as you avoid sin!

Kept me in stitches!

While I went into this book looking for it to be an atheist-driven humorously-cynical discussion of what religion of the future might be like, or perhaps something purporting to be revealed information which was anti-atheistic, I was delighted to find a number of ludicrously-funny descriptions of what might happen on humanity’s religion front. It is a crossover between science fiction and religious commentary with a large dose of humor. It was a collection of 10 (okay, 11, but that’s “classified”) absurdly hilarious faux-news articles from the 22nd century. These included: A bonobo who typed out the gospels in different languages using a combination of his fists and groin, a virus that causes religious people to suddenly adopt religions they know to be false, with some interesting effects on agnostics and atheists, and some impiously surprising ones on religious leaders, an electronic chess program which declares itself to be Muslim - reminiscent of a main virtual-reality character in A Virtual Affair, SETI finding intelligent extraterrestrials in the afterlife, the theological issues with humans finally overcoming death and becoming immortal – with a sacrilegious ending, scientists using a “Slightly Larger” Hadron Collider to find the anti-particle for the God Particle found several years ago, which acts to repel and deflect God’s observation or presence.
The book is divided into chapters, or “leaks”, one for each decade of the 21st century. Many of the chapters (leaks) stand on their own. For the later chapters or leaks within the book, it is very important to read Leak 5, about a scientist who got 5 Nobel Prizes in 2142, as his discoveries are referenced later.
It is very important to read the Introduction; to have it explained how the author came upon these news stories. The author – or editor as he appears to view himself - explains how important this is, denying that he wrote any of these articles, lest the book be considered “false” and “a work of fiction”, and thus him be considered the author.
In brief summary, I laughed all of the way through this short book.
I would also mention that the artwork between the chapters, by Carlos Ferreira, certainly contributes to the absurd humor of this delightful book.
